From the Principal’s Desk #3

6th March 2019

The start of the second half term has been tinged with sadness at Edward Worlledge due to the unexpected passing of our Chair of Governors, Mr. Bond. Bob dedicated many years to Edward Worlledge and we are very grateful to him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very sad time. He kindness and good humour will remain at the academy in the memories of the many that he worked with and supported.

As we progress into this half term, we have our parents’ evenings to look forward to. These are to be held on the 12th and 14th March and give you a chance to talk with teachers around the pastoral and academic progress that your child is making at this, the half way point of the year.

Meetings with parents are scheduled to last 10 minutes, allowing as many parents as possible to speak with class teachers. If there are wider issues that you need to discuss, please schedule these at an alternative time via the main academy office.

Following the Easter Holiday, both our Year 2 and Year 6 children will be involved in SATS tests. Some of our parents may have older children who have already taken these types of tests. Others may be experiencing these for the first time.

To support parents over the holiday in helping their child revise for these tests, we are holding a series of parents’ briefings during the last week of this half term:

Wednesday, 3rd April, 2019 – 5:30pm for Year 2 and Year 6 parents
Thursday, 4th April, 2019 – 9:00am for Year 2 and Year 6 parents
Thursday, 4th April, 2019 – 2:30pm for Year 2 and Year 6 parents

Please do make a date in your diaries and look out for the response form in a later text message.

I am also keen that parents and children feel supported during the Easter Holiday with revision whilst away from the academy. To this end, the academy will be open for Year 2 and Year 6 parents and pupils to ‘drop in’ between 9:00am and 11:00am on Tuesday 16th April for any support that might be needed. Miss Warner, Vice Principal, and Mrs. Harvey, Safeguarding Lead, will be on site to assist you. Please remember that this is the only time that the academy will be open over the holiday period.

Thank you to those of you who have responded positively to these short updates from my office. I am always looking at better ways to communicate with you. Part of better communication with parents and carers will include an updated newsletter that we aim to launch at the start of the April this year. The newsletter will update you on key dates going forward into the summer, as well as providing a look back at highlights from the spring.

Before I head to the classroom, can I take a moment to remind us all about good attendance. Regular and punctual attendance is key to a good, strong foundation in learning. We aim to ensure that your child makes the expected academic and social development for their age; we need them to be here to do that. I know from the uptake of OATCoin that our attendance is on an upward trend – we had as few as 9 children away last week! – but we can still improve. I set the children a target of 100% academy attendance in all classes for an entire week in return for a ‘big reward’. Needless to say, they are very excited about this but I need your support at home to make attendance here as good as it can possibly be.

The academy cannot authorise holidays during the term time. We would also respectfully request that medical appointments are made outside of academy hours whenever possible – as a parent I know this is difficult but every session missed is a session of lost learning.

Thank you for your support. I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible at our parents’ evenings next week.
