Arriving in the morning
The gates open at 8:30am, and the children come in through the gates and line up ready for school. The children are then collected from the playground at 8:40am which allows the adults to meet and greet them. They come into the classroom and either read, complete an morning activity or change for PE. Registration then takes place in the classroom and children are usually in the classroom ready for their English lesson at 9:00am so please ensure your child is in on time so they get their mark in the register.
They will also need to hand in their reading record.
9:00am – 10:00am – English
We use the Power of Reading scheme which recommends a range of age appropriate, engaging texts with high-quality illustrations. We start each unit by exploring the text in detail using our reading skills, retrieving key information, making predictions about the characters and plot, and drawing inferences. The children are then taught about a particular genre of writing and follow a sequence of planning, drafting and editing to create their own piece of writing.
We also have sessions focussed on grammar, spelling and handwriting.
10:00am – 10:30am – Phonics/Spelling/Comprehension
During this time we have spelling and comprehension which allows us to embed the spelling rules we have learnt in Year 1 and to learn alternative spellings. Some children will be taking part in their Little Wandle phonics groups. On Monday to Wednesday in comprehension we investigate a text and learn about vocabulary, inference, prediction, explanation, retrieval and being able to summarise a text, so we can answer questions and learn to think like a writer.
10:30am – 10:45am – Break
At 10.30am the children will be provided with a snack to take out to play for 15 minutes. Please make sure your child has a water bottle for a drink. Please ensure your child has a coat during the colder months.
10:45am – 11:45am – Maths
We start our Maths lessons by focussing on key maths skills and facts
Maths lessons are supported by the Maths Mastery scheme, where we focus on each objective using concrete, pictorial and abstract methods to deepen understanding.
There are lots of things that you can do at home to help you with your maths, such as:
11:45am – 12:35pm – Lunch
All Year 2 children get a hot dinner provided for free, which they will eat in the academy cafeteria. Once they have eaten, they then get the chance to run off some steam outside.
12:35pm – Registration
12:40pm – 3:00pm Foundation Lessons
During the afternoon, we take part in our foundation subjects – Music, ICT, PE, Science, History, Geography, Art/DT, Computing, RE and PHSE. Pupils are mostly taught by the class teacher but are also taught by other members of staff who can share their own subject expertise with the children. Two days a week we also have Maths. We also have a story shared by an adult to teach the children the joy of reading.
3:00pm – Home time
After a busy day, it’s time for you to go home! We will independently collect our things for home, and all sit on the carpet together for a story. We will then line up on the playground and wait for your parents/carers to pick you up. Once one of the academy adults sees your parent/carer you will be called to go home, please do not leave the line unless an adult has called you. Unfortunately, we can’t let you go home with a different adult unless we have been told that you are being picked up by someone different.
