The gates open at 8.30am, and the children come in through the gates and go straight to their classrooms. Registration takes place at 8.55am, so please ensure your child is in on time so they get their mark in the register.
During this time, children will be given a morning task to complete, they will also need to hand in their reading record.
We use the Power of Reading scheme which recommends a range of age appropriate, engaging texts with high-quality illustrations. We start each unit by exploring the text in detail using our reading skills, retrieving key information, making predications about the characters and plot, and drawing inferences. The children are then taught about a particular genre of writing and follow a sequence of planning, drafting and editing to create their own piece of writing.
At 10.15am the children will be provided with a snack and drink, before going out to play for 15 minutes. Please ensure your child has a coat during the colder months.
We use a range of extracts and full texts, some of which are the texts we focus on in our writing lessons from Power of Reading, to teach, practise and apply the reading skills. Children are given opportunities to work pairs to discuss vocabulary, the sequence of events and key information in the text, and then apply the knowledge gained from these discussions to an independent task.
We follow the Shanghai Maths Programme called ‘Effective Maths’ which allows children to develop a good understanding of mathematical procedures and concepts. Effective Maths supports all pupils through concrete resources as well as mastery challenges. The children learn how to identify mathematical patterns, relationships, and connections; it is a comprehensive framework which ensures high-quality maths teaching.
All Year 2 children get a hot dinner provided for free, which they will eat in the academy cafeteria. Once they have eaten, they then get the chance to run off some steam outside.
Foundation lessons take place every afternoon, we cover history, geography, science, art, computing and PE. PSHE, RE and D&T are covered during curriculum days.
